Neighborhood kitchen Küchenschiff [Kitchen ship]

A project by students of the Social Design Department

29. July 2026
In a world dominated by consumerism and capital, many residents of Matzleinsdorf have no time, money, or space left to meet up in their neighborhood, build connections there, or enjoy any consumption. This exacerbates social inequality and weakens community cohesion. Given that one in two people in Austria admits to financial worries, we need ideas that go beyond charity and make it possible for everyone to celebrate the everyday. Inspired by the emancipatory concepts of “Red Vienna” – such as the “Volksküche” [people’s kitchen] or the “Einküchenhaus” [one-kitchen house] – the project by students from the Department of Social Design, under the direction of Brigitte Felderer aims to address current problems with this project.

In collaborative processes, we experiment with different methods of curatorial research, theory and practice. Thus, discourses, ruptures, and horizons emerge that challenge the canon, occupy exhibition spaces and the public sphere, and seek not only to digitise museums and collections but above all to democratise them.
